Former Indian hitter Virender Sehwag commended Yashasvi Jaiswal, but believes it is too early to compare him to some of the game’s giants.

At 22, his performance is impressive in Test cricket. He scored a 171 on his first game versus West Indies and a double hundred against England in the last second Test. His style is often compared to Sehwag, and other legends such as Tendulkar and Sir Bradman.

However, in a virtual chat with PTI Bhasha, Virender Sehwag denied such analogies, claiming that they were premature.

“He [Yashasvi Jaiswal] is a very good batsman but I think comparisons are too early.”

When questioned if the 2019 IPL, which ends so soon to the T20 World Cup, may cause burnout and player tiredness, Sehwag responded:

“I am confident that fatigue or burnout will not be a concern for players heading into the T20 World Cup. On the contrary, I feel that tournaments like IPL or ILT20 will prove instrumental in preparing teams for the global event. In IPL, one has to play 14 matches over two months, so there is ample time to maintain form and fitness and fine-tune skills ahead of the T20 World Cup.”

June welcomes the start of the T20 World Cup 2024. This event is taking place in the West Indies and the USA. It follows right after the final week of May when the IPL is scheduled to conclude. Many athletes will show their talent in both these events, resulting in a brief recovery period.

Despite the rising fame of league cricket, Virender Sehwag stated that one should prioritize playing for the country.

The 45-year-old used the example of West Indian players who recently left the ILT20 League to play for their country in the Australia series.

“I firmly believe that representing a country should always take precedence over participating in any league. It is essential for players to prioritize national duty above club commitments. A prime example of this dedication was evident in the ILT20, where several West Indies players chose to leave the league temporarily to represent their nation in international fixtures in Australia.”

Virender Sehwag added:

“While I understand the allure of international leagues for domestic players, I believe their primary focus should remain on excelling in domestic competitions with the ultimate goal of representing India internationally.”
