Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal thanked head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma for encouraging him to bat to the end of the day after scoring an incredible 179* (257) against England on Friday.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored the highest on the first day of the Vizag Test. On a fantastic batting pitch, he scored more than half of India’s 336/6 total as all of his colleagues gave up early wickets. Rajat Patidar, making his debut, had the second-best score of the day with 32 (72). He was perhaps the only player to suffer bad luck.

“The wicket was damp in the morning, a bit settled in the afternoon and then when the ball got older it was spinning and they were getting the bounce. I was thinking of how to manage the shot selection just like Rohit bhai and Rahul bhai conveyed. They keep sending me messages that I need to convert it big and make sure that I am playing till the end. I tried to play as many balls as possible.”

Against James Anderson, who bowled both new and old balls with regular lines and lengths, he took no chances. He limited the unpredictable occasions and identified the ideal times to establish limits, according to the spinners.

India would hope that, with the help of Ravichandran Ashwin, the final recognized batter, their youngest player would help them surpass 400. Anything less would give England, who have already won the first Test, even more room to dominate.
