In the opening innings of his farewell Test match at the Newlands in Cape Town on Wednesday, South Africa’s acting captain Dean Elgar was unable to pose any threats to Team India. In the game’s sixth over, he was out for just four runs off of fifteen deliveries.

In an unusual move, the left-handed hitter pursued a wide delivery from Mohammed Siraj that was delivered over the wicket and outside the off-stump. The right-arm pacer had already removed Aiden Markram in his second over and was in the midst of a nasty period with the new ball.

Dean Elgar lost his wicket and was left stunned, glued at the crease. Given how much the Indian pacers were talking about the ball, the stroke might not have been necessary. The southpaw did not make any noticeable foot movements to improve his form while playing the stroke. It did not assist Dean Elgar’s situation that he tried to play the shot with an inclined bat.

In the opening session in Cape Town, the Indian pacers are on fire as South Africa is fighting for its life in the middle. Jasprit Bumrah entered the game by removing Tristan Stubbs for just three runs off eleven deliveries in his maiden Test innings, after Mohammed Siraj’s removal of both opening batsmen.

Using the new ball, Bumrah annoyed his old franchise buddy. The young player awkwardly attempted to block a back-of-a-length delivery to his body, unable to handle both the additional bounce and the tight line. Rohit Sharma claimed the catch at short leg when Stubbs was unable to get an inside edge on the ball, which looped in the air after striking his body.

After ten overs, the Proteas are struggling at 15-4 and are in much more danger. Both Bumrah and Siraj have been perfect thus far, but Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham are presently occupying the crease and have yet to make an impact.
