The team management expressed confidence in the experienced campaigners by entrusting Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with the opening responsibilities for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. Consequently Yashasvi Jaiswal has been relegated to a backup role whereas Shubman Gill failed to secure a berth in the 15-man squad.

The combination is yet to ignite in the event, failing to score significantly against new ball in challenging batting conditions in New York. Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has lately encouraged the experienced combination to continue as openers for the remainder of the tournament. During an interview on Star Sports, Lara stated:

“Definitely, India had the option to play a left-right opening partnership. They went with two great players, two guys who’ve done a great job for India with the bat for their individual franchise as well in terms of the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I think they’ve got to stick with it as you just said if you do make changes on top, Virat Kohli has to come in the order a little bit lower and that’s going to upset things there.”
