Sania Mirza, the legendary Indian tennis player, delivered a speech to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) players ahead of their first match in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023. RCB will face off against the Delhi Capitals, led by Meg Lanning, on Sunday, March 5, at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
Last month, Sania Mirza, a legendary tennis player with a two-decade-long career, announced her retirement. She will play her farewell match on Sunday in her hometown of Hyderabad.
Sania was appointed as the mentor for RCB in the inaugural season of WPL. In a video released by the franchise on various social media platforms, Sania first interacted with RCB’s women’s team players.
She expressed her pleasure to be a part of RCB and said she knows nothing about cricket. She also shared her plan to help women athletes in India with the mental aspects of sports, which she had learned over the past 20 years. Sania also offered the players her phone number and availability for support and advice.
During their conversation, Mirza advised Devine on handling the harsh Indian media and the pressure that comes with it. She shared her experiences dealing with media scrutiny and encouraged Devine to focus on her own game and not let external factors affect her performance. Mirza told Devine:
“It’s normal to feel the pressure. It’s very normal, but you have to know how to deal with it and kind of block the noise a little bit. And Indian media is tough (giggles). I mean, it’s also good stuff (and) that’s how you grow.”
Mirza also shared her struggles with a youngster during their bus journey to RCB’s training camp in Mumbai.
