On Saturday, April 22, in the 30th match of IPL 2023 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by seven runs. After being put in to bat first, GT scored 135/6 thanks to Hardik Pandya’s half-century. He scored 66 runs off 50 balls after coming in to bat at number three in the second over. Wriddhiman Saha also contributed with a valuable knock of 47 off 37 balls. Krunal Pandya and Marcus Stoinis took two wickets each for LSG.

Mohammed Shami started the chase for GT on a high note by bowling a maiden over against KL Rahul. After settling in, Rahul became aggressive and helped LSG reach 53/0 after six overs, scoring 30 runs off 19 balls. He then switched to an anchor role and kept the scoreboard ticking as GT bowlers applied pressure in the middle overs. With 30 runs needed from 35 balls, LSG seemed to be in a comfortable position to win the match. However, a dramatic collapse in the final overs led to their defeat.

KL Rahul slowed down in the second half of his innings and was dismissed in the final over after scoring 68 off 61 balls, leaving LSG in a difficult situation. LSG lost four wickets in the last over as GT pacer Mohit Sharma bowled brilliantly to lead his team to a narrow victory. After the match, Rahul reflected on the loss:

“I don’t know how this has happened, happened so fast and that’s cricket and it reminds us of that the game is not over till the last ball, and we let the game slip which was in our pocket.”

“Quite brilliant with the ball, 135 probably 10 under par, the bowlers were very clear with the plan and we started well with the bat and can’t believe what has happened at the end, these things happen and will try and come back strong.”
