Shubman Gill failed to capitalise on what appeared to be a promising start, losing his wicket totally against the flow of play during the first session of Day 2 of India’s current Hyderabad Test against England.
Gill was at ease on the crease despite India losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the day. He scored 36 runs with KL Rahul for the third wicket, and the combination appeared to be on track to help India pass England’s first-innings mark without more incident. However, under the strain of the dot balls, Gill attempted an extended shot and paid a high price.
Shubman Gill attempted to flick a fuller delivery from Tom Hartley through the space between mid-on and short-midwicket. However, he couldn’t quite center the ball and found Ben Duckett, much to the pleasure of the rookie, who took his maiden Test wicket.

Despite facing 66 balls at the bat for 23 runs, Gill did not appear to have perfect control of his strokes. It definitely sums up his Test career thus far: knocks that promise a lot but finish in frustration.

Shubman Gill might have been removed much sooner on Day 2 if England’s fielders had been more vigilant. The right-hander danced down the track to Joe Root, slamming him down the ground, but the angle from around the wicket meant he was off the pitch of the ball.
Naturally, Gill mistimed it high in the air, but Ben Stokes lost track of the ball and only noticed it when it touched the ground. That fortunate break may have been a turning point for Shubman Gill, but the kid quickly returned to the dugout.
The hosts would want KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer to form a strong partnership and prevent India from collapsing. Given how difficult it may become to bat as the game continues, India will want to bat only once and large.
