Joe Root struck in his first over of the game, removing the dangerous-looking Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 2 of India’s first Test against England in Hyderabad.

Jaiswal smashed the English bowlers in the closing session of Day 1, smashing nine boundaries and three sixes for his 76. He attempted to start Day 2 on a similar tone, hitting Root for a four-over long-on with his first ball of the day. But the former England captain had the last laugh on the following delivery.

Root delivered a terrific tossed-up offering that was dipped in batter. Jaiswal attempted the drive but got a thick inside edge and threw it back to the bowler. Root timed his jump perfectly, completing the grab with both hands and celebrating enthusiastically.

It was a squandered chance for Jaiswal, who cursed himself for passing up a well-deserved hundred. Former cricketers expressed disappointment that Ben Stokes did not bowl Joe Root on Day 1.

The England captain quickly made apologies by throwing the ball to his predecessor in the opening over of Day 2, and Root delivered.

Yashasvi Jaiswal made a swift exit after scoring an impressive 80 runs in just 74 balls. This made a great impact, specifically with his 10 boundaries and three sixes. KL Rahul then stepped up to the challenge, joining the game when India had a strong hold at 123-2.

Former India skipper Anil Kumble believes Ben Stokes missed a trick by not bowling Joe Root on Day 1 against left-handed batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“I thought England missed a trick by not using Joe Root because he’s someone you can really turn the ball, and he has a good action.”

Anil Kumble Added:

“And there was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is a left-hander, and we saw Ashwin trouble the left-handers. So England probably missed a trick.”

It’s worth mentioning that Root was one of England’s most effective bowlers on their previous tour to India. He took five wickets in the third Test at Ahmedabad, scoring 5-8 off 6.2 overs, although the visitors lost by ten wickets.
