Ricky Pontings packed his bags after a long 7 seasons as a head coach of the Delhi Capitals. The discussion on the possible replacement is underway and one name that is more prominent than others is Saurav Ganguly. The former Indian captain who is already serving as the Director of Cricket for DC is eying for the hot seat as the head coach.

In an interview with Aajkaal, which is a Bengali Daily, Ganguly opened up about his desire to coach the team.

“What about me? Let me give it a shot? I wanted to bring in England’s new star, Jamie Smith, to play for the Pretoria Capitals in the DC’s SA20 league. He was even ready to come, but England will be busy with their tour of India at that time, so we’ll need to look to sign for some other players.”

Saurav Ganguly May Not Become DC Head Coach

But reportedly, Delhi Capitals might not go with this idea. They want their Director of Cricket to just handle his already handful of duties. Other than taking care of the Capitals, Ganguly is also responsible for overseeing its sister franchises in foreign leagues. This makes it impossible for Dada to fully invest in his coaching role.

Capitals are looking for not just a ‘Temporary Fix’ but someone for the long term. A source told News18 that the franchise is looking for someone who has an ‘aggressive approach’ and has a ‘comprehensive oversight of both international and domestic players’ similar to India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir

“Ganguly is already handling multiple duties for the franchise as the Director of Cricket”

“The team requires a practical coach who closely follows the circuit and maintains an aggressive approach similar to Gautam Gambhir. Given his comprehensive oversight of both international and domestic players, it’s no surprise that Gambhir has found great success as a mentor.”

“The management is seeking a long-term solution for the head coach position, rather than a temporary fix. This is a critical season, coming right after the mega auction, as the team enters a new competitive cycle.”
