If Australia were to overcome Afghanistan, they must record their biggest successful chase in the 50-over World Cup – 292 runs. Australia were 49-4 after 8.2 overs at the time of writing, with Glenn Maxwell and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease.

The first two breakthroughs came from Naveen-ul-Haq, who dismissed Travis Head (silver duck) and Mitchell Marsh (24 off 11). Meanwhile, Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed Josh Inglis for a golden duck after bowling David Warner (18 off 29).

Ibrahim Zadran’s disciplined batting effort, along with Rashid Khan’s cameo, enabled Afghanistan achieve 291/5 in their allocated 50 overs. Zadran scored 129 runs undefeated from 143 balls, hitting three sixes and eight boundaries. Rashid Khan finished with 35 off 18 deliveries, including three maximums and two fours. In addition, the pair had a 59* partnership for the sixth wicket.

Josh Hazlewood was Australia’s standout bowler, ending with statistics of 2/39, while Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa each took one wicket.

Afghanistan is coming off a hat-trick of World Cup victories in 2023. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands were all vanquished lately.

The team captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi also defeated defending champions England by 69 runs despite defending 284. A win over Australia increases their prospects of reaching the ICC tournament’s semifinals.

Meanwhile, Australia dropped their first two games against India and South Africa before rallying to win five straight. In their most recent match, they defeated England by a score of 33 runs.
