Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has had a rather unfortunate return to cricket after suffering a major leg fracture. Representing Victoria in a Sheffield Shield contest against South Australia, Maxwell sustained a blow to his wrist while fielding in the slip cordon and was taken off the field. It was heartbreaking for Maxwell and his supporters as he looked to make a triumphant comeback to cricket.
Glenn Maxwell has been out of action for some time now due to his leg fracture and was hoping to make a successful return to the cricketing arena. Unfortunately, his return was cut short due to an injury sustained while fielding.
Maxwell attempted to catch the ball at first slip, but the ball took the outside edge and flew towards him. Unfortunately, the ball just bounced right in front of the all-rounder, causing the ball to hit his wrist and pass by him. He grabbed his wrist in pain and could not play for the rest of the game.
The scan did not show any evidence of a fracture, as confirmed by a spokesperson from Cricket Victoria. Nevertheless, a decision will still need to be taken as to whether he can bat in the second innings or not.
Maxwell’s match at Junction Oval in the Sheffield Shield was his first red-ball game in four years. He was given out lbw in his first innings after the injury, scoring only five runs. Before the Sheffield Shield match, he had scored a well-played fifty in the Victorian Premier League to demonstrate that he was ready for the encounter.
Victoria had a 55-run advantage when South Australia was dismissed for 114 in the first inning. They have now scored 79-3 in the second inning, with Maxwell yet to appear.
