Mohammed Shami had an immediate impact in his comeback encounter in the 2023 World Cup match between India and New Zealand on Sunday, October 22 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

The 33-year-old has been benched for the first four games of the showpiece ICC event. Will Young, who sliced onto the stumps, was removed by the speedster. The opener was out after 17 balls, including three boundaries.

The dismissal came in the ninth over of New Zealand’s innings. Mohammed Shami delivered a length ball that bounced off the off-stump. Young attempted to cut the delivery but ran out of room and ended up dragging it onto the stumps.

The hosts took the wicket and reduced the Kiwis to 19/2 after 8.1 overs.

Last month, Mohammed Shami took a fifer against Australia in the bilateral ODI series. He has already taken 20 wickets in 13 matches in 2023.

India had a bright start in the World Cup encounter when captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first. Prior to Shami’s dismissal, Mohammed Siraj made the first breakthrough by dismissing Devon Conway for a duck, thanks to a superb catch from Shreyas Iyer.

The Men in Blue have made two alterations to their starting lineup. Mohammed Shami took the position of Shardul Thakur, while Suryakumar Yadav took the place of Hardik Pandya, who had an ankle injury in the last encounter against Bangladesh.

New Zealand, on the other hand, fielded the same XI that defeated Afghanistan by 149 runs.

The two teams are coming off four straight victories in the prestigious ICC competition. The Blackcaps, on the other hand, lead the points table thanks to a higher Net Run Rate.

India’s most recent ODI World Cup victory was against New Zealand in 2003. In the ICC events, they trail the Kiwis 3-5.
