The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven runs in the first game of Sunday’s double-header on April 23. However, Virat Kohli was dismissed off the first ball he faced, which was also the first delivery of the game. Trent Boult bowled a full-length inswinger that Kohli tried to flick but missed and was trapped plumb in front of the wicket. This was not the first time Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck in the IPL; it has happened on seven occasions.

Here, we look at 3 such instances:

1) Against KKR, 2017

In a 2017 match between RCB and KKR at Eden Gardens, RCB won the toss and chose to field first. KKR posted a total of 131 in their designated 20 overs. In response, RCB got off to the worst possible start, with Virat Kohli being dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings by Nathan Coulter-Nile. KKR’s bowling attack, led by Coulter-Nile, who took 3 wickets for just 21 runs, was too good for RCB to handle. RCB eventually lost the match by 82 runs after being bowled out for just 49 runs, their lowest-ever total in the IPL.

2) Against LSG, 2022

RCB were put into bat by their opponents and lost Anuj Rawat in the penultimate ball of the first over, bringing Virat Kohli to the center. Kohli had a nightmare outing and was dismissed off the first delivery by Dushmantha Chameera. Kohli chose to play a shot on a simple back-of-a-length delivery but couldn’t execute it because of the bounce and was caught by Deepak Hooda at backward point. RCB eventually posted 181 and won the game by 18 runs.

3) Against SRH, 2022

In 2022, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) faced off against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). SRH won the toss and chose to bowl. RCB’s innings started poorly, with captain Faf du Plessis out in the second over. Virat Kohli was next but was dismissed for a golden duck. Marco Jansen bowled a full delivery, and Kohli drove it straight to Aiden Markram at second slip. RCB struggled as a team and were all out for just 68 runs. SRH easily chased the score in only 8 overs.
