SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 31 runs in the eighth match of IPL 2024 on Wednesday, March 27 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Following the win, SRH earned their first points of the competition, while MI dropped their second consecutive game.

SunRisers Hyderabad scored an impressive 277-3 after being sent in to bat by the Mumbai Indians. SRH opener Mayank Agarwal was removed for 11, but Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) put up 68 for the second wicket. After the two were gone, Heinrich Klaasen (80* off 34) and Aiden Markram (42* off 28) put up an unbroken 116 for the fourth wicket.

Chasing 278 runs, the Mumbai Indians batsmen went all out. Despite an excellent batting performance, they fell well short of SunRisers Hyderabad’s total, finishing on 246-5. Tilak Varma hit 64 off 34, while Tim David stayed undefeated on 42* off 22.

Several key records were broken in the high-scoring SRH versus MI IPL 2024 match. Here are a few examples:

1. Highest team total in the IPL

The SRH total of 277-3 is the highest in IPL history. Hyderabad exceeded the previous record set by Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

In IPL 2013, the Bengaluru franchise scored 263-5 against the Pune Warriors, with Chris Gayle smashing a record 175* from 66 overs.

2. Most sixes in an IPL match

The encounter between SRH and MI on Wednesday included 38 sixes. It’s a record number of sixes in an IPL game. While Hyderabad scored 18, Mumbai countered with 20. The previous record was 33, which was set three times.

In fact, six is a T20 record. A total of 37 sixes were struck in an APL game between Balkh Legends and Kabul Zwanan in Sharjah in 2018, as well as a CPL game between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Basseterre in 2019.

Mumbai Indians’ colossal 246-5 broke cricke­ting records as the highest total e­ver by a team batting second in IPL history. The­ previous record was shattere­d, which stood at 226, scored by Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings back in 2020’s Sharjah clash.

5. Most runs conceded by a bowler on IPL debut

Kwena Maphaka made a dismal IPL debut for Mumbai Indians. He gave 66 runs in four overs, the highest by a bowler in his debut IPL game. Michael Neser held the previous record, conceding 62 runs for Punjab Kings versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013.

6. Fastest fifty by an SRH batter

Abhishek Sharma took only 16 balls to score his half-century, breaking the record for the quickest IPL fifty by an SRH batsman. He beat Travis Head’s record for a half-century of 18 balls in a single game.

Head has broken the previous mark set by the Australian combination of David Warner and Moises Henriques (20 balls).

7. Highest total at the halfway stage of an IPL innings

SunRisers had reached 148 at the 10-over mark in their match against Mumbai on Wednesday.

This is a record score after the first ten overs of an IPL innings. The previous high was 131, set by the Punjab Kings in 2014 and the Mumbai Indians in 2021. Ironically, both incidents were reported against SunRisers Hyderabad.

8. Highest powerplay score for SRH

SunRisers had reached 81 at the end of their powerplay versus MI. This is their greatest powerplay score in the IPL, topping their previous best of 79 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017.
