On Day 1 of the WPL 2023 competition, Mumbai Indians’ left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque put on a stellar performance with 4/11, leading her team to a 143-run victory over Gujarat Giants. However, 24 hours later, DC’s 24-year-old left-arm pacer Norris made history, claiming 5-29 in his team’s 60-run win against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Tara Norris was part of DC’s five-man overseas contingent, as he hails from an associate nation and is thus eligible under tournament rules to be included in the XI.
DC acquired Norris during the WPL 2023 sale for an initial fee of ₹10 lakhs. Their captain, Meg Lanning, as well as international stars Marizanne Kapp (South Africa), Alice Capsey (England), and Jess Jonassen (Australia), were the other four foreign players that featured in the lineup against RCB.
“Never thought I’d have an opportunity like this in my career,” – stated Tara Norris
After being honored by Player of the Match for her terrific bowling performance, Norris expressed her excitement, remarking that she could have never imagined having such a terrific chance. Ecstatic, she declared:
“Delighted. I think Meg (Lanning) and Shafali (Verma) started fantastically with the bat to take a bit of the pressure off the bowlers. But yeah, really happy. I never thought I’d have an opportunity like this in my career, so just to be here has been absolutely amazing. So I’m absolutely delighted.”
Delhi Capitals will be the only team to boast five overseas players in WPL 2023 since none of the other franchises bought a player from an associate nation at the auction. Fascinatingly, no other team has had this unique opportunity!
