On 17th February, it was made known that Temba Bavuma was to succeed Dean Elgar as the captain of South Africa’s Test team. He had been previously given leadership of the T20I squad from Quinton de Kock, playing in 25 matches with a victory rate of 15-9, the last being against the Netherlands. This makes him the third-highest T20I captain in South African cricket, behind only Graeme Smith and Faf du Plessis. Bavuma will still be captain of the ODI squad until Cricket South Africa officially accepts his resignation and selects someone new.

Who Is South Africa’s Next T20 Captain? Here Are 3 Possible Replacements For Temba Bavuma

1. Aiden Markram

At the ripe age of 23, Aiden Markram was selected to lead the South African squad in a six-game ODI series against India, despite having very little experience in international cricket to this point. In 2014, he managed to secure victory in the ICC U19 World Cup in the UAE and was named the Player of the Series for scoring 370 runs with an impressive batting average of 123.33. This feat makes him the only captain to ever bring home the cup for South Africa.

2. Quinton de Kock

De Kock assumed the leadership of the Proteas in all international cricket formats. In a year, he took over from du Plessis in this role. His first foray as captain was during the 2018 Sri Lanka tour, leading the team in the last two ODIs while Faf was injured. Both matches were lost under de Kock, but the series was already won with a 3-0 lead.

3. David Miller

With an impressive 152 One Day Internationals and 111 Twenty20 Internationals career since 2010, David Miller is the most senior Player on South Africa’s squad for limited-overs cricket. He was given the time of captain for the 2019 home T20Is against Pakistan, and in his first match as a leader, Miller put up a record-breaking score of 65 off 29 balls, resulting in a 7-run victory and a series win.
