David Warner has been appointed as the new captain of Delhi Capitals for the 2023 IPL season following the unfortunate unavailability of Rishabh Pant due to a car accident. The franchise hopes that Warner will lead the team to their first IPL title, despite having a solid team that has never won the tournament. Three captains have yet to be successful in leading the Delhi Capitals so far.

Most persons who were the captains of Delhi Capitals had poor results, as only three out of the twelve had more than a 50% success rate. Virender Sehwag, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant were the only ones who achieved this. David Warner and a few other noteworthy players were unsuccessful as the leader of the Delhi Capitals. Here is a list of three of their names.

1. James Hopes

In the final phase of the 2011 season, Delhi Capitals appointed James Hopes as their new captain after Virender Sehwag’s injury. However, Hopes failed to lead the team to a single win, resulting in Delhi finishing last in the tournament with four wins in 14 matches. They lost to CSK and Punjab Kings, while their game against Pune Warriors was abandoned.

2. Kevin Pietersen

During the 2014 IPL season, Kevin Pietersen was appointed as the captain of the Delhi franchise, leading them in 11 matches, resulting in only one win against Mumbai Indians. Pietersen missed three games due to injury, and Dinesh Karthik took over the captaincy, resulting in one victory. However, Delhi finished last in the points table with only four points from 14 games. As a consequence, neither Pietersen nor Karthik played for the franchise again.

3. Mahela Jayawardene

Although known for his success as a captain, Mahela Jayawardene could have performed better as the skipper of Delhi. In 2012, he served as the team’s vice-captain and led the team in a few matches when Sehwag was absent. In 2013, he was named the full-time skipper, but under his captaincy, the team only managed four wins in 16 games over two seasons, with 11 losses and one no result.
