Throughout the IPL‘s twelve years, fans have witnessed nail-biting chases, riveting spells, and gigantic sixes, all of which have left an indelible mark on their memories. Since so much is at stake in this T20 tournament, there is little room for fun.
While most IPL games are intense and tense, a few humorous moments have made us enjoy the game even more. Considering this, let’s look at the funniest moments in IPL’s past.
The crease antics of Shikhar Dhawan.
Let’s first evaluate the Kings XI Punjab-Rajasthan Royals IPL match.
Rajasthan Royals were cruising at 108/1 in the 13th over of their IPL opener, chasing 185. Ravichandran Ashwin then “stumped” the powerful Jos Buttler. After Buttler hit Punjab for ten fours and two sixes, Ashwin’s frantic and “unsportsmanlike” approach was criticised.
Before, while chasing 164, Ashwin tried to run out Shikhar Dhawan of Delhi Capitals similarly. The effort was made at the same score (108/1) as when the Royals were batting before Butler was out, which is oddly entertaining. While Ashwin was bowling to the other end, Shikhar Dhawan gave a spectacular stuttering stride performance.
Ravindra Jadeja’s hilarious six
Sir Ravindra Jadeja smashed a six in the final over of a tight Indian Premier League match against Rajasthan. Jadeja and Dhoni needed 18 runs to win Ben Stokes’ over.
Stokes hit the first ball wide to try to hit Jadeja’s head. The left-handed batter got a massive hit while the ball went past the straight boundary. Jadeja and Ben Stokes collapsing after hitting the ball was entertaining. Jadeja and Stokes lying on the ground, eyes on the ball, went viral.
MS Dhoni sprinted out of his crease without looking at the ball and signalled for Jadeja to follow, which added to the drama. After the ball went over the barrier, the CSK captain conferred with Jadeja. The commentary box laughed loudly, contagiously.
King Kohli bows to Sarfaraz Khan.
This episode showed Virat Kohli’s light-hearted side, despite his image as a fiery and energetic player.
IPL 2015: Sarfaraz Khan, 17, batted for Rajasthan Royals after AB de Villiers was run out for 57. Youngster’s aggressive 45* from 21 balls helped RCB reach 200 for 6.
After the innings, the captain bowed to the young player. Ravi Shastri laughed during commentary and suggested a way to say what Kohli said: “Namaste Ji, Well Played!”
Warner air-kissed Pollard
A cricket match with Kieron Pollard in it would always be exciting. He left the field during an IPL match and returned with tape over his mouth; that’s a moment nobody will forget.
For the 2013 IPL season, David Warner got into it with the big West Indian. Warner and Pollard had already exchanged a few words and a ball, which Warner swung at but missed. Pollard then approached the Australian to say something.
The reply from Warner, the Australian way: a flying kiss to the Caribbean guy. But Kieron Pollard always takes up a chance to deliver a cutting retort.
A comical expression of “Ewwww…” came over Pollard’s face as he reacted.
It was yet another hilarious anecdote from Pollard’s time in the IPL.
Dhoni’s first Test wicket!
Kevin Pietersen, commentating on the 2017 Indian Premier League, sent a funny message to the outgoing Indian skipper via Manoj Tiwary.
Kevin Pietersen asked Tiwari to tell MS that Peterson is a better golfer than him.” Dhoni’s response was hilarious and made the commentary box giggle.
“He was my first Test wicket!” MS Dhoni boldly spoke into Manoj Tiwary’s mike. “It was a referral,” Kevin Pietersen concluded.
MS Dhoni didn’t remove Pietersen after the on-field call was overruled, but his reaction won over fans. Virat Kohli’s first video call with the Englishman since the incident addressed this issue.
