According to sources, Indian opener Shubman Gill has been released from the hospital in Chennai where he was taken after his platelet count plummeted.

While he is expected to miss India’s 2023 World Cup opener against Afghanistan on October 11 in Delhi, his participation in the main game against Pakistan on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is also in doubt.

According to PTI, Shubman Gill was taken to the well-known multi-care specialty hospital ‘Kauvery’. Rizwan, the Indian team doctor, kept track of his improvement. Under the condition of anonymity, a BCCI insider informed PTI:

“Shubman Gill was on drip at the Chennai team hotel for the last couple of days. His platelet count dropped to 70,000 and he was admitted to a medical facility as a precautionary measure. He was admitted for all mandatory tests on Sunday night when India played Australia but by Monday evening he was discharged.”

Shubman Gill was unable to play in India’s first game against Australia on Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai owing to sickness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India gave a health update on Gill on Monday, confirming that the batter will not go to Delhi but will instead be under the care of the medical staff.

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023.

“The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,”

Gill has been outstanding in one-day internationals in recent months, forming an excellent partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma.

He has appeared in 35 One-Day Internationals, scoring 1917 runs at an average of 66.10 and a strike rate of 102.84, with six hundreds and nine fifties. In addition, the 24-year-old has a double hundred: 208.

In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan batted first against Australia but got out for a golden duck.

India were battling at 2-3 after two overs of chasing 200. However, Virat Kohli (85 off 116) and KL Rahul (97* off 116) combined 165 for the fourth wicket as India recorded a remarkable victory.
