Few expected Afghanistan to beat reigning champions England in their 2023 World Cup match in Delhi. They took on the English bowlers after being asked to bat first, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz leading the assault with a 57-ball 80.

Between, the Afghans posted a battling 284, thanks to Ikram Alikhil’s 66-ball 58 and cameos from Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Rashid Khan and Mujeeb took over with the ball and were unstoppable. The spin attack, which included the two and Mohammad Nabi, took eight wickets combined on a surface that allowed them to work their magic on the English batting order.

As Afghanistan continued to take wickets, Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi contributed, with the former sending down a ripper to castle England captain Jos Buttler.

Harry Brook fought alone, but after Mujeeb had him nicking off for a 61-ball 66, the horse had bolted for England, who were defeated by 69 runs in one of the ODI World Cup’s all-time great upsets.

This leaves the reigning champions with one win from their first three games, the same as Afghanistan, and severe doubts about their championship defense as stiffer obstacles remain.
