On Sunday, October 22, during their 2023 World Cup match in Dharamshala, Indian bowler Mohammed Shami once again demonstrated why he is so successful in the dying overs by throwing out Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry on successive deliveries with two absolutely magnificent yorkers.

At the latter part of their innings, New Zealand needed a few fast runs, but Shami kept chipping away with wickets and stopped their tail from wagging. Before Santner could get his bat down in time, the off-stump went spinning as Shami’s delivery zoned in on the stumps from around the wicket.

When Mohammed Shami delivered another full delivery that tailed in and broke Matt Henry’s leg stump, he was in the zone. The pacer was ecstatic, and it was only fitting given how he managed to hit twice.

Daryl Mitchell was sensibly farming the strike after scoring a magnificent hundred to make sure he got as many huge hits as possible in the finish. He mistimed a delivery from Shami, though, and it went right into long-on, giving the bowler his second World Cup five-wicket haul.

Shami, who recorded his maiden World Cup wicket against England four years ago, is the first Indian bowler to accomplish this milestone. Here is a clip from the dramatic last over, which shows him getting his fifth wicket:

After being put under pressure for the whole of the first innings, the Men in Blue made a stunning recovery thanks to Mohammed Shami’s spectacular 5/54 stats. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell’s incredible 159-run partnership gave the Kiwis a good chance to reach their goal, which was likely higher than 300.

The Indian bowlers made care to contain the Blackcaps to 273, though. To counter any New Zealand danger with the new ball, the hosts will need to get off to a strong start.
