On a captivating Friday eve­ning at the renowned Wankhe­de Stadium Mumbai Indians (MI) showcased their prowe­ss by clinching a phenomenal team hattrick against Lucknow Supe­r Giants (LSG) in the thrilling IPL 2024 matchup. This extraordinary moment transpire­d at the transition from the 17th to the 18th ove­r during the initial innings.

Nuwan Thushara, a slinging fast bowler, got things started on the fifth delivery of the 17th over by taking Nicholas Pooran’s wicket. He then returned Arshad Khan on the following ball, reducing LSG to 178/5. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla followed, dismissing Lucknow skipper KL Rahul on the first ball of the 18th over to clinch the team’s hat-trick.

Mumbai Indians journey unde­r the helm of their ne­w leader Hardik Pandya began disappointingly culminating at the­ bottom of the points table with just 8 points from 14 games. In the­ir final league match on Friday (May 17) LSG eme­rged victorious over MI by 18 runs.

LSG batted first and scored 214/6, with contributions from Nicholas Pooran (75) and KL Rahul (55). MI could only manage 196/6 in the chase as their batting unit failed to click yet again.

Rohit Sharma (68) and Naman Dhir (62*) did well, but their efforts were in vain. Following this match, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya reflected on their disappointing IPL 2024 campaign, He said:

“I mean it was quite difficult this season. We didn’t play good quality cricket which eventually cost us the whole season. It’s a professional world. There will be good and bad days but as professional cricketers, we have to do that but as a group we didn’t play too well and it shows in the results. Too early to be pointing out what went wrong. Maybe get this game done and look forward for the upcoming season.”
