Kane Williamson’s career with the Gujarat Titans (GT) began disastrously when he sustained a significant knee injury while attempting to save a boundary in the deep in IPL 2023’s opening game against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Williamson’s injury cut short his involveme­nt last season. However, he­’s recovered and e­ager to play a pivotal role for GT in IPL 2024. Jokingly, he said he­’d request the ne­wly appointed captain Shubman Gill to avoid fielding him at that spot.

Speaking to CricketNext, Kane Williamson responded to Shubman Gill’s proposal concerning his fielding stance as follows:

“That’s a very good point. I will try and corner him at some stage.”

Williamson is willing to assist Gill with his leadership duties. On this, he added:

“Shubman’s talent is out of this world. He is such a gifted cricketer and incredible to watch and makes it all look so easy. He is really excited at this opportunity and my role is to support and help whenever he sees best fit.”

Shubman Gill had a great IPL 2023 season, scoring a whopping 890 runs and winning the Orange Cap. Kane Williamson revealed how well Gill performed even for the Indian squad last year, and he hopes that the teenager would carry that form and momentum into his leadership.

Kane Williamson confe­ssed his rehabilitation journey from injury last ye­ar presented difficultie­s. However, he e­xpressed joy to reunite­ with the Titans, eagerly anticipating a significant contribution in IPL 2024.

On this, he said:

“Obviously last season I was there for five minutes. It was frustrating but it has been a great learning curve and a real process in terms of recovery and rehab after the injury. I really enjoyed my brief time here last year. So it’s great to be back and looking forward to the season.”

Here’s Williamson’s take on the ‘anchor’ role, which has sparked much controversy in the T20 format:

“I have never really liked the word anchor. I think everybody has a different skill-set and buy into what’s required and what role they have in the team.”

Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha have been a strong starting duo for GT during the last two seasons. It would be intriguing to watch where the Titans place Williamson, especially with the brilliant Sai Sudharsan in the mix. The Kiwi veteran praised Sudharsan for both his performances and his work ethic.
