The captaincy tenure of the current ODI captain of the Indian Team, Rohit Sharma, will end with ICC World Cup 2023. Post his tenure, the current Vice Captain of the team, Hardik Pandya, will be the new captain for both ODI and T20 formats. He will also lead the team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, but Rohit Sharma will likely continue as the captain for test matches.

A senior BCCI official has mentioned that for now, Sharma will be the captain of the Indian Cricket team for ICC World Cup 2023. However, if he chooses to discontinue, then it is essential to have a plan for the future in place. There is no official statement made by the Board yet, but if we believe the speculations, Hardik Pandya is likely to succeed Sharma. The official further added that Hardik has been relatively consistent lately and is young enough to take over things in his hand. He will make it big if given a fair chance and optimum support.

This indicates that the Board prefers the captaincy and it is Hardik Pandya. In the IPL Season 2022, Hardik Pandya was the captain of the IPL debut team Gujarat Titans, which ultimately lifted the IPL Trophy. This success made Pandya a favourite of the Board, and thus, his reliability is rising drastically.

Under the captaincy of Pandya, the Indian cricket team has won a T20 series against Sri Lanka and the first ODI of a 3-match series against New Zealand. Given his stats, the team will likely outperform in the forthcoming series. He is also likely to take over the T20 captaincy of the group. Team India has lost only 1 T20I out of 8 under the captaincy of Pandya. However, the test captaincy may be bagged by KL Rahul.

Post the series against New Zealand, Pandya will be seen in the IPL season 2023, Asia Cup, and later in the ICC World Cup 2023. We cannot wait to see him playing all around the year with the utmost class and swag, just like always.
