The west indies legend Brian Lara asserts that he (virat kohli) may will find it tough to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries. Lara noted that even if Virat Kohli manages five hundreds per annum for next four years he would reach 84 international centuries only being 39 years old which equals the total amount of runs that Tendulkar made during his entire career.

In recent times, Virat Kohli has been playing excellent cricket for the Indian team. With 765 runs at an average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.32 in 11 innings, he was the top scorer in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The 35-year-old’s total surpasses Tendulkar’s 673 in the 2003 Men’s ODI World Cup to set a record for most runs scored in a single edition.

During the World Cup, Virat Kohli tied Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds with a century against South Africa on his 35th birthday. He subsequently beat the Master Blaster’s record by scoring his 50th one-day century in the semi-final against New Zealand.

Many supporters and detractors of Virat Kohli believe that he would be able to surpass Tendulkar’s legendary record of 100 international hundreds after his World Cup heroics. But that’s not rational reasoning, in Lara’s opinion.

“How old is Kohli now? 35, right? He has 80 but still needs 20. If he scores five centuries every year he’d need four more years to equal Tendulkar. Kohli will be 39 then. Tough job, very tough job,” the West Indies great told Anandabazar Patrika.

“Can’t say with certainty, no one can. Those saying Kohli will break Tendulkar’s 100-centuries record won’t be taking cricketing logic into account. 20 centuries seem a long way away. Most cricketers can’t score that in their entire career. I won’t be adventurous and say Kohli will do it. Age doesn’t stop for anyone.”

“Kohli will break many more records but 100 centuries seems the most difficult one,” the 54-year-old went on to add.

With 26,532 runs in 518 matches at an average of 54.36, Kohli ranks fourth in international cricket. He has a total of 80 hundreds and 138 fifties to his credit.

Virat Kohli has also been rested for the white ball phase of the South Africa trip. Kohli did not play in the most recent T20Is against Australia at home. The dates of India’s three T20I and three ODI matches against the Proteas are December 10–21.

Nevertheless, the expert batsman will represent the red balls. India plays a series of away tours against South Africa. These include Tests at Centurion on December 26-30, and Cape Town on January 3-7.
