Shreyas Iyer rectified Team India’s long-standing number 4 batting problem in the just ended 2023 World Cup with outstanding performances in that position.

The problem for the team since Yuvraj Singh exited from the international team. This was also one of the main causes of India’s defeat at the 2019 World Cup semi-final. Iyer did not disappoint in that position this year, he played incredibly well and secured a place among other stars through such awesome efforts.

Iyer scored 530 runs at an outstanding average of 66.25 in 11 games for India in the 2023 World Cup, including two centuries and three fifties. He adapted well to the circumstances and contributed significantly to India’s dominance in the middle overs of the competition.

Anil Kumble, speaking to ESPNcricinfo, praised Iyer for his continuous efforts, saying:

“Shreyas Iyer has played a very significant role in how Virat Kohli has built partnerships in the middle-overs. He scored a hundred at a very good strike rate in the semi-final, and KL Rahul also chipped in with a quick-fire knock. These guys know what their strengths are and what role they need to play. That combination has worked really well.”
