Jasprit Bumrah has tasted the captaincy in his career. The Mumbai Indians player has led India in red ball as well as in the white-ball cricket when captains went unavailable for particular series.

And it seems like Bumrah wants to lead the team again and believes that bowlers could be good leaders. In a recent interview with Indian Express, he clearly expresses it.

“I feel bowlers are smart people because they have to get the batsmen out,” Bumrah said.

“Bowlers have to do the hard job and are not hiding behind a bat, they’re not hiding behind a flat wicket. We’re right in the firing line. When we lose a game, it’s usually the bowlers who are blamed. So it’s a hard job.

Bumrah took the examples of Pat Cummins, Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis as the successful captains being the bowlers

“We’ve seen Pat Cummins doing really well. When I was a child, I’d seen Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis as captains. Kapil Dev has won us a World Cup. Imran Khan has won a World Cup for Pakistan. So bowlers are the smart ones.”

Basit Ali Asks Bumrah Not to Chase Captaincy

Bumrah got a point. But former Pakistan player Basit Ali thinks otherwise. He gives his fair reasons too. According to Basit, the Indian fast bowler should concentrate on bowling. About the Kapil Dev and Imran Khan examples, Basit Ali reminded Bumrah that they were not just bowlers but good all-rounders.

“Bumrah shouldn’t chase captaincy, and he is a top-class bowler and should focus on his bowling. He spoke about Kapil Dev and Imran Khan, who were successful captains because of their all-around skills. The two didn’t get captaincy when they got into teams as bowlers. This is a difference between a bowler and an all-rounder.”

What’s Next for Bumrah?

Bumrah has been enjoying his vacation after a terrific run in the last T20 World Cup. the player is expected to return for the India vs Bangladesh Test series.
