Aaron Finch, a former Australian cricketer, had a wonderful friendship with David Warner after opening for their country for numerous years. He feels Warner has enough potential to be picked up by an IPL side in the upcoming season’s auction, even if the Delhi Capitals (DC) release him.
David Warner has scored only 168 runs in eight IPL 2024 games and was dropped out of DC’s final league game despite being eligible for selection.
However, speaking with ESPNCricinfo, Aaron Finch stated how David Warner’s IPL exploits and expertise with kids might play a significant role in his selection in the probable IPL 2025 mega auction. He said:
“A big auction is coming up next time (this year-end). I think there would be a team that would love to have his (Warner’s) experience, be it in playing eleven, or as a replacement or as someone to nurture younger talent. I would not say it is his last IPL game, but he has had a poor season.”

Jake Fraser-McGurk, a young explosive opener and Warner’s compatriot, emerged as possibly DC’s greatest player in IPL 2024. Despite Fraser-McGurk’s X-factor and the argument surrounding his selection, the experienced southpaw retained his position in Australia’s T20 World Cup team.
Michael Clarke on David Warner’s IPL future
Another former Australian captain and David Warner colleague, Michael Clarke, was also there for the debate, and he agreed with Finch that Warner will obtain an IPL deal next season. However, Clarke is fairly guaranteed that Warner will not be picked up for the hefty INR 6.25 crore price tag he was signed for at the IPL 2022 big auction.
On this, he said:
“He (Warner) could get picked up at the auction, he just might not get the money he is used to. He is at that stage of his career when he is not performing at his absolute best and you cannot expect the same money. I would not be surprised if he is not picked up.”

David Warner lit up the stage for the Delhi Capitals in the previous season delivering a stellar performance by amassing an impressive tally of 516 runs across 14 games including six halfcenturies. In a remarkable display of leadership Warner also took the reins in the absence of Rishabh Pant who was sidelined due to a severe car accident.
