Dismissals like this are common, especially when the game is a high-profile knockout match. India has been run out several times in World Cup knockout games. These dismissals have broken the hearts of millions of people and continue to haunt fans.
The following are three instances in which India lost a knockout game due to a run-out of a batter.
1. Harmanpreet Kaur
In the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals, India’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was run-out when she was well placed on 52.
Ultimately, Kaur was dismissed because her bat got stuck on the turf, and her feet were in the air, which was as unlucky for India as possible. By just five runs, we lost the game and a spot in the final, and one had to wonder what might have happened if Kaur had made it.
2. MS Dhoni
The Indian team lost to New Zealand in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-finals. New Zealand batted first and scored 239. India lost three wickets for only five runs. The innings were consolidated by MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, but Jadeja was dismissed. Dhoni fought hard, but he was run out attempting a double. It was a devastating loss for the Indian team.
3. Virender Sehwag
India entered the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup with Sourav Ganguly at the helm. Although India won the toss and opted to field first, Australia scored an impressive total of 359. India’s chase suffered a poor start, yet Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar had plans to turn things around as they took India to 147-3. Unfortunately, their efforts were thwarted by an excellent throw from Darren Lehmann, resulting in Sehwag being dismissed. This brought about a swift decline for India, who was bowled out for 234.
