It was the 18th over of the innings of England, where England needed just 28 runs off 18 balls. The ball was handed to Ishant Sharma against Eoin Morgan, who hit a six at the 2nd ball, and the successive two balls were called wide, reducing the gap by 20 runs off 16 balls. Morgan’s next hit got caught by Ashwin, bringing Ravi Bopara to the striking end. Bopara tried to hit a six but ended up losing a wicket to a catch by Ashwin. England lost two wickets in two balls making India win the trophy.
2. IPL Final, 2011
CSK gave a massive target of 206 to RCB in the IPL 2011 Finals, and RCB’s Gayle was the top run scorer of the tournament with 608 runs in that season. After multiple dot balls, Gayle misinterpreted the ball and edged the ball into the gloves of MS Dhoni, standing behind the wickets, losing his wicket to Ravichandran Ashwin.
3. ICC World Cup Final, 2011
Dhoni is the only captain who has won the title in all three world cups. India was playing against Sri Lanka in the World Cup finals, where India struggled to chase 275 as they lost their openers Sehwag and Tendulkar early. It was expected that the in-form player Yuvraj Singh would enter the arena. However, Dhoni decided to bat before Yuvraj. Dhoni and Gambhir made 109 runs in a partnership, and after losing Gambhir’s wicket, Dhoni and Yuvraj made India win the match and the World Cup.
4. ICC T20 World Cup Final, 2007
The maiden T20 World Cup was the first world cup that Dhoni was leading. It was the world cup finals, where India was defending a score of 157. In the last over, Pakistan needed only 13 runs to win. Despite having Harbhajan Singh in form, Dhoni let Joginder Sharma bowl against Misbah-ul-Haq, playing on 37. In the third ball of the over, Misbah’s catch was taken by Sreesanth, making India win the world cup.
5. India v Bangladesh, ICC T20 World Cup, 2016
It was the last over of India v Bangladesh in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016, where Bangladesh needed two runs in the previous ball. The batters ran for a double, and Dhoni was all set for a runout. Mustafiqur Rahman was run out by MS Dhoni, thrashing Bangladesh’s dream to win the world cup.
