On February 7, 2023, Australian T20 skipper Aaron Finch announced his retirement from International cricket. The Australian top-order batter has been playing for the team since 2011, and in his more than a decade-long career, he has played 146 ODI matches, 103 T20 International matches and 5 Tests. Aaron Finch has already announced his retirement from the ODI format back in September 2022.
After he retired from the T20 International format, the speculations for the next Australian T20 captain started to rise. We see these three players as the next potential captain of Australia’s T20 squad.
1. Steve Smith
Steve Smith is the Australian right-handed batter who has already served as the team captain from 2015 to 2018. Smith, to this day, has played 63 T20 International matches for Australia, where he has scored 1008 runs. Steve also plays for Rajasthan Royals in IPL and has played 103 IPL matches with a collective score of 2485 runs. His stats and record in the T20 format make him a potential candidate for T20 captaincy.
2. Glenn Maxwell
The next potential captaincy candidate is Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. He has played 98 T20 International matches for Australia since 2012 and has made 2159 runs in the format. For IPL, Maxwell has played 110 games and has made 2319 runs. However, lately, Maxwell has kept himself out of form, which might be taken against him in the race for captaincy.
3. Ashton Turner
Ashton Turner is a solid right-handed Australian batter who is relatively new to the team compared to the other two captaincy options. He started playing for Australia at the International level in 2017. Turner, however, is a perfect form at present and might become the selectors’ choice for captaincy. Aaron Finch has also mentioned that Ashton Turner is a potential candidate for Australian captaincy.
