David Warner did a poor performance in his series against India. He scored 11 runs across two innings in the first test in Nagpur; it took 21 balls to get him off the mark on day one of the second tests in Delhi. He eventually fell for 15 but ended up giving a 50-run opening Stand.
After his performance, 36-year-old Usman Khawaja sympathized with Warner as he understands the difficult situation warner is in, as it is not easy to start innings in India. Usman Khawaja backed up Warner to regain form and make a comeback in the ongoing series against India.
In a press conference, Khawaja also states that warner got aggressed before Ashwin got him in the second inning. Hence there’s a chance of warner making a comeback knock in the remaining outgoing series. He added:
“He hit two fours against Ashwin in the last game before he got lbw, so he showed some aggression; it’s never easy out there, especially starting, even if you are opening. So I was pretty lucky today. I also got a couple to get me going. Sometimes you do not get that, and it can be challenging. I need more than three innings. There is a long way to go for him in this Test series.
Considering his previous performances, David Warner has the worst average (21.72) comparing his teammate’s scores who have already played at Indian Soil. The New South Wales batter could not field during nine overs while India batted because of his sore elbow & a few blows to his head.
“I am looking forward to what may happen. David Warner has been such a good player for such a long time. Every time his back is against the wall, he produces something. So we’ll see.”
Khawaja stated that he doesn’t think much about how to play. He plays according to the situation and wicket’s behaviour after having an 81-run knock.
He added, “I play by feel. I play by what is right for the wicket. I do not go out there thinking I want to play a certain way. I see how the bowlers are trying to ball to me, and then I try to read the game from there. So it is quite simple. And that is pretty much what I did today.”
Khawaja, with Peter Handscomb’s unbeaten 72, helped make 263. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul scored 21/0 on day one and now trail by 242 runs, with them on the crease.
