Australian left-arm pacer of note Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Tuesday (December 19).

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signed him for a record-breaking 24.75 crores at the IPL 2024 auction at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The 34-year-old has skipped the previous eight IPL seasons in order to stay fit and fresh for national responsibilities.

When Mitchell Starc’s name came up during the auction, the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) both placed several offers. After MI and DC had surpassed their respective boundaries, the Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KCR) entered the fray.

GT and KKR then engaged in a heated bidding battle, causing the bid amount to skyrocket. KKR finally won the match by paying 24.75 crores.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore happy with Mitchell Starc’s signin

After winning the offer for Australian bowler Mitchell Starc at the IPL auction on Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore expressed happiness. Venky stated to the broadcasters:

“The cutoff could have been the remaining purse (laughs). We don’t talk or think about the price because as I’ve been saying every team has the same purse of 100 crores. Each team slices it up differently. If you’re spending 100 how you slice it is dependent on your strategy, the combination of the team.”
