Gujarat Titans (GT) have named Shubman Gill as their new captain for the IPL 2024 season. He’ll take over for Hardik Pandya, who was traded to his previous team Mumbai Indians (MI) in a big all-cash deal on Monday.
Shubman Gill was a marquee signing for the Titans in IPL 2022, and he was their second-highest run-scorer with 483 runs in 16 matches. He pushed it to the next level in the IPL 2023, scoring 890 runs in 17 matches to earn the Orange Cap as well.
The young athlete faces a challenging task ahead. Hardik, a young man from Gujarat, guided the Titans to their first championship in 2022 and came in second place in 2023. He became well-known for creating a strong team dynamic in the locker room.
Shubman Gill would be one of the IPL’s youngest captains. He’ll be working alongside Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten on the coaching staff. He has no international leadership experience, although he has captained his state side several times and served as India’s vice-captain during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.
Hardik Pandya expresses his happiness to be back with Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians, who first spotted Hardik Pandya, repurchased him for Rs 15 crore. The five-time IP winners acquired the funds by transferring Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore in a larger all-cash trade.
Hardik is being considered as a potential alternative for current MI captain Rohit Sharma.
