On Monday, November 27, the Gujarat Titans named teenage hitter Shubman Gill as their captain for the upcoming 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gill will take over for ace all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was moved to the Mumbai Indians (MI) for all cash.

So far, the Gujarat Titans have enjoyed an amazing run in the IPL. They won the prized championship trophy on their first appearance in 2022, led by Hardik Pandya. Gujarat finished second in the next season after a five-wicket defeat (DSL method) against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final.

Shubman Gill is Gujarat’s most prolific run-scorer in league history, with 1373 runs at an average of 47.34 in 33 matches.

Shubman Gill has had an outstanding year, demonstrating his versatility across forms with consistent results. In the most recent season of the IPL, he wowed onlookers with his batting heroics.

Gill was a significant architect in Gujarat, which finished as the table-toppers after the league stage. The right-hander allowed 890 runs in 17 innings, the second-most in a single season. He hit three hundreds and four fifties.

Gill put forth an outstanding effort in Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians (MI). He blasted away the competition with a stunning 129-run knock as GT cruised to a 62-run victory to go to the final. He also contributed significantly with the bat in the crucial summit battle, hitting 39 runs off 20 deliveries.

Following Hardik Pandya’s departure, the club management praised him for his efforts by naming him captain.

It remains to be seen if Gill can return the GT think tank’s trust. Having said that, given his age, he might very well be a long-term possibility, leading the team for several years to come.
