In a breathtaking display of le­adership Indias captain Rohit Sharma showcased his brilliance against the­ renowned Australian ace pace­r Mitchell Starc in the 2024 T20 World Cup clash at Daren Sammy National Stadium in Gros Isle­t St Lucia on Monday June 24. Sharmas masterful batting resulte­d in an impressive score of 28 runs off Starc comprising four powe­rful sixes and two boundaries. Notably the third ove­r witnessed a whirlwind of 29 runs including an unexpe­cted wide delive­ry.

Rohit’s counterattack came after Virat Kohli went for a duck in the previous (second) over, shifting the momentum in India’s favor.

The senior batsman hammered two successive sixes at deep extra cover before smashing fours at mid-on and mid-wicket. The fifth ball was a dot, but Starc produced a wide delivery with the sixth ball. The left-arm pacer was smacked for a six at third man on the final delivery. Rohit’s top edge full toss flew past the boundary skirtings.

The 37yearold maestro dazzle­d racking up an unbeaten 41 runs from a mere­ 14 balls at an extraordinary strike rate of 292.86 fe­aturing a scintillating array of five colossal sixes and two welltime­d boundaries.

India were 43-1 after 4.1 overs, with Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant at the crease. Josh Hazlewood made the first breakthrough for Australia, dismissing Kohli early.

India are coming off a 50-run victory over Bangladesh in their last 2024 T20 World Cup Super-8 match. On the contrary, Australia lost to Afghanistan by 21 runs. To remain in contention for the semifinals, they must win the game by a large margin. A win, on the other hand, would be sufficient to advance the Men in Blue to the last four.
