Following the victory of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) bowler Mitchell Starc heaped praise on Shreyas Iyers captaincy. Nonetheless he cheekily recommended that Iyer work on his toss record during the offseason.

Shreyas Iyer’s leadership in the IPL was widely praised for guiding KKR to their third IPL title and one of the most dominant IPL campaigns in history. Despite missing the 2023 edition due to injury his impactful return in 2024 under challenging circumstances left a lasting impression.

Shreyas Iyer had Gautam Gambhir and Chandrakant Pandit’s confidence off the field, but it was the way he employed Andre Russell and his tactical skill that gave KKR a near-invincible shine.

“To see him go about his captaincy has been fantastic. He’s pretty level-headed, pretty calm even when things have not gone our way. He may need to work on his coin tossing in the off-season.”

Mitchell Starc will represent Australia at the 2024 T20 World Cup. The left-arm seamer enters the event in strong shape. He did not have the ideal start to the IPL season, but he justified his price with a number of memorable performances in the knockout stages.

Shreyas Iyer tried various antics at the toss with the coin during IPL 2024

Shreyas Iyer lost the toss in all three of KKR’s losses this season, as well as the Qualifier 1 and Final. The captain tried kissing the coin and rotating around while flipping it in the air, but nothing of these methods worked.

“The last 6 matches in the dressing room there has been havoc, teammates are coming in and asking skip what’s happening, we are losing tosses, but we are winning games that’s what matters.”

Iyer’s overall toss record as captain in the IPL is very good, with 36 wins in 70 tries, but his figures in the 2024 season were dismal, as Mitchell Starc suggested.
