After a sting operation by a news channel, Chetan Sharma resigned from his position as chairman of the senior selection committee. The sting revealed confidential information about players and team management.

He has resigned, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah has accepted his resignation. His position became untenable as a result of the sting operation. “He resigned voluntarily, and he wasn’t asked to resign,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on Friday.

Chetan and other selection committee members in Kolkata attended the Ranji Trophy final between Bengal and Saurashtra to select the Irani Cup team. However, once his resignation was accepted, Chetan left for Delhi and avoided the media at the airport.

In the sting operation run by Zee News, Chetan alleged that many players received injections to return to playing cricket even though they were only 80 or 85 per cent healed. He also reported a clashing of ideas between himself and the team management about pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback for the T20I series against Australia in September last year. Additionally, he declared that Hardik Pandya, Umesh Yadav, and Deepak Hooda frequently visited him at his home.

As well as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Chetan claimed there was an ego tussle between Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. In response to these remarks, Chetan lost the trust of BCCI’s top brass and national squad members.

“He has lost the trust of Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Rahul Dravid. During discussions with the selection committee, he could not sit across from them since he had lost all trust. He paid the price for having such a loud mouth, according to a BCCI member.” Senior members and support staff of the Indian team had expressed their mistrust to top BCCI officials before Chetan’s resignation was accepted. Former India opener Shiv Sunder Das could be appointed interim chairman.
