Dinesh Karthik the seasoned wicketkeeper for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opened up about his belief that the IPL 2024 clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could potentially signal his swan song. Looking back Karthik felt strongly that RCBs dismal run losing seven of their initial eight matches seemingly dashed their hopes of a playoff berth.

However, the reversal has been nothing short of remarkable, with them winning their following six games in a row, securing fourth place in the IPL 2024 points standings.

Dinesh Karthik said in a video uploaded on RCB’s social media that he had intended to contact his family to watch him play his final game against CSK, anticipating his side would not advance to the next level. This is what he said:

“Three weeks ago I made this decision that okay seven losses from eight games so this (May 18) will be my last day. I called 26 members of my family and I thought it will be my last day. But they ended up realizing that I maybe playing a few more games.”

CSK was on the edge needing 17 runs in the last over to secure a playoff spot. The atmosphere was electric as MS Dhoni hammered Yash Dayal for a six over fine leg. The balls flight beyond the stadium left Dinesh Karthik convinced that luck had turned in the hosts favor.

Karthik highlighted how the six helped RCB produce a drier ball, allowing Yash Dayal to bowl his slower deliveries into the pitch with greater control. He said:

“I think the best thing to happen today was Dhoni hitting that six outside the ground. We got a new ball which was much better to bowl with. Yash that was good bowling.”

Karthik finished by asserting that RCB had demonstrated to future IPL teams that they could still make a comeback even if they got off to a terrible start.
