David Warner is set to be omitted from the remainder of the second Test against India in Delhi due to a concussion, allowing Matt Renshaw a chance at redemption. This is an enormous setback for Australia. Though he put up a hard fight for his 15 on day one of the match before being caught off Mohammed Shami’s bowling, he was hit multiple times during India’s short-ball burst from Siraj and Shami. The former did not take part in the nine overs that the opposition managed prior to the close of play. Renshaw, on the other hand, has been presented with an opportunity to make amends after failing dismally in Nagpur – mustering only two runs overall and being dismissed without scoring in his first innings there.
Usman Khawaja: ‘David Warner is a little bit weary at the moment’
Usman Khawaja said following the first day’s play that his fellow opener felt weary after suffering multiple blows to his body and that it would be up to the medical staff to decide what to do.
“His condition will be assessed tomorrow; he is currently a little weary. The staff must figure out what happens from here because he obviously received a knock to the arm and then to the head. The head made him weary at the moment, so he couldn’t go out to the field.”
After three consecutive low scores, Khwaja defended David Warner, reminding him that the series is far from over.
“It was evident that he showed some aggression when he hit two fours of Ashwin in the last game before getting out LBW. It’s never easy out there, especially starting out, even if you’re opening, so I was lucky today. I got a couple of fours to get me started. Sometimes, you don’t get that, and it can be hard. So yeah, three innings isn’t enough for me.”
