India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, called the press conference for the first time since the latter’s appointment. They addressed several questions regarding India’s team and captaincy selection for the upcoming T20I and ODI series in Sri Lanka.
One of the hot topics, of course, was the captaincy in T20I. BCCI had announced Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain of India for the series by snubbing Hardik Pandya. Pandya’s name was upfront up until the selection happened.
Ajit Agarkar On Why Suryakumar Yadav Got T20 Captaincy
According to the selector, the dressing room was enquired about regarding the captaincy, and they got positive feedback about Suryakumar Yadav for the position. Hardik Pandya’s consistent fitness troubles have played an important role in deciding the leader of India in the shortest format.
“Suryakumar Yadav was made the captain, because he is one of the most deserving candidates. We have been getting the feedbacks from the dressing room. He has got great cricket brain, he is one of the best T20 batters in the world, and the one who is likely to play all the games. Hardik is a very important player. He has the skillsets which are very difficult to find. Fitness has been a challenge. That was the thought behind it. We wanted the one who is available all the time. Surya has got the necessary quality that you need to succeed as a captain.”
After Becoming India T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav Permanently dropped from ODI
Agarkar also revealed that Suryakumar Yadav is permanently dropped from the One Day Internationals as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are back in the squad. The chief selector said SKY wasn’t even consulted, leading to this decision.
” He is permanently dropped from ODIs and we didn’t even discuss him as Shreyas & KL is back and they had terrific ODI WC, Pant is also back. So, yeah Sky is a T2OI player and we have so much quality in ODIs.
