The two seats at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where MS Dhoni’s memorable World Cup-winning six landed in 2011, have been rebuilt to provide a unique experience. The chairs are now part of the “World Cup 2011 Victory Memorial Stand,” a specifically constructed cabin.
The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will host the first match of the 2023 ODI World Cup on Saturday, October 21, when reigning champions England meet Australia. The game will be a day-night match that begins at 2:00 PM IST.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) went to their X account a day before the match to tweet a photo of the renovated seats where Dhoni’s 2011 World Cup-winning six landed.
Dhoni took the lead in the 2011 World Cup final versus Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. He was named Player of the Match after scoring an unbeaten 91 off 79 balls to help the Men in Blue chase down the 275-run goal and win the ODI World Cup for the second time.
In the chase, India got off to a shaky start, with Lasith Malinga dismissing Virender Sehwag for a duck and Sachin Tendulkar for 18. However, a youthful Virat Kohli (35 off 49) and Gautam Gambhir (97 off 122) scored 83 runs for the third wicket to lift Team India.
After Kohli was caught and bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dhoni joined Gambhir in a match-defining 109-run stand. In the last over, Dhoni famously launched Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Kulasekara for a six.
