Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) won a critical match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad to stay in contention for a playoff position in the IPL 2023. In a tense chase, it was LSG’s big hitters Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran who came up trumps for the visitors.

During the chase, the LSG openers struggled to score runs, with Kyle Mayers requiring 11 deliveries to open his account, typifying their troubles on a two-paced surface. While Glenn Phillips ended Mayer’s disastrous innings, Quinton de Kock and Prerak Mankad helped to steady the ship.

After de Kock’s dismissal, the visitors were fighting for momentum in the middle overs. LSG, on the other hand, flipped the switch after the 12-over mark, with Marcus Stoinis stepping on the gas. Part-timer Abhishek Sharma was scorched for five sixes in one over, allowing 31 runs and handing LSG the advantage in the death overs.

It was a walk in the park from there, as Nicholas Pooran’s spectacular cameo and Prerak Mankad’s well-compiled half-century gave the visitors a much-needed win, propelling them to fourth place in the points standings.

The host team won the toss and chose to bat first on a slow surface in Hyderabad. Aiden Markram’s team got off to a shaky start as Yudhvir Singh dismissed an in-from Abhishek Sharma in the third over of the encounter. Despite the early setback, the Orange Army concluded the powerplay on a high note courtesy of Rahul Tripathi’s quick appearance.

While Triphati’s innings ended with a brilliant catch by Quinton de Kock, Anmolpreet Singh also left after the powerplay. The hosts were in good hands in the middle, with skipper Aiden Markram and his compatriot Heinrich Klaasen looking in good form. However, the momentum shifted as Markram and the last match’s star Glenn Phillips were eliminated in consecutive deliveries by Krunal Pandya.

However, the home team responded with a quick combination between Klaasen and Abdul Samad. Despite losing their stride in the latter stages due to a disputed no-ball decision, the hosts finished with a respectable total of 182 runs in their 20 overs.
