Ravichandran Ashwin, a veteran Indian off-spinner, claimed his 35th five-wicket haul in the longest format on Day 3 of the upcoming Test against England at Rajkot on Saturday, February 25.

Ashwin is preparing for his 100th Test match for India’s team, potentially the final game in Dharamsala for this series. When questioned about his sentiments as the milestone approached, the veteran spinner expressed a wish to see India win their 99th Test first.

Ravichandran Ashwin had the following to say regarding the fourth Test thus far:

“You can pick as many wickets as you want but winning the Test match after 4-5 days, the feeling is surreal. I would like to have that feeling tomorrow. Ro (Rohit Sharma) and Jaiswal have started really well so hopefully they can carry on from here.”

India dismissed England for 145 in the second innings and have set a goal of 192 to win the Test. Rohit Sharma (24*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (16*) have already taken 40 runs off the total and are undefeated at Stumps.

Former Indian legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar informed Ravichandran Ashwin that it would be fantastic if the latter could lead the hosts on the field during his 100th Test in Dharamsala.

While Ashwin was moved by Gavaskar’s appreciation for him, he remarked that he had outgrown such expectations. He said:

“You’re being too generous. Thank you so much. Have removed expectations from all these things. I think I am well past all that but genuinely saying I am enjoying every single moment I am being with this team and the longer it lasts, I will be very happy.”

With India down by 47 runs, Ravichandran Ashwin nearly felt compelled to improve his form. That is precisely what occurred, with the experienced off-spinner’s statistics of 5/51 putting his team in a strong position in Ranchi.
