After a clinical performance on Day 1, India continued in the same spirit on Friday, increasing their lead in the Test. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill began India’s first innings Wednesday morning at 135/1, inflicting further misery on the English bowlers with fluent hundreds.

They batted through the first session and added 171 runs for the second wicket before leaving in short succession after lunch. Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan then blasted adventurous half-centuries in the middle order, helping India extend its lead even further. However, they were unable to turn them into large ones and left in the third session.

The English bowlers took a few of fast wickets following their partnership to reduce India to 428/8. Jasprit Bumrah (19*) and Kuldeep Yadav (27*) then batted patiently till stumps on Day 2, taking India to 473/8 and a 255-run advantage.

Shubman Gill spoke to the announcers after the play’s end, reflecting on his knock and saying:

“It was my dad’s dream to play at this level, it was his vision, hopefully he’ll be proud of what I’ve been able to do. I thought the ball wasn’t doing much at that time, instinctively I wanted to play that shot and went over the top. I feel everytime I go into bat, even today, I missed on a big one, missed that ball as I didn’t sight it properly. Everytime I go out there, I try to convert a good start into a big one.”
