The opening match of the World Cup 2023 will be a replay of the 2019 World Cup final.
On October 5 (Thursday), England and New Zealand will face each other in the opening match at Ahmedabad’s renowned Narendra Modi Stadium. After 12-years, India will host the World Cup, and given the pattern of the last three tournaments, the hosts will enter the competition as favorites.
On November 19, all ten competing teams will attempt to hoist the trophy with well-oiled units. Up to 51 members of the World Cup-bound teams compete in the IPL. Here’s a glimpse of those guys in terms of their teams:
Mumbai Indians (MI)
The formidable MI boasts four Indian players in the World Cup-bound squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Jasprit Bumrah. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green also adds strength to the MI lineup.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK contributed to the World Cup with Ravindra Jadeja, along with Englishmen Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes. New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner and Devon Conway, along with Sri Lankans Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana, complete the CSK representation.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur represent KKR in the World Cup, alongside New Zealand pacers Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee.
Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings featured in the World Cup through Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran (England) and South African pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
Rajasthan Royals contribute with Ravichandran Ashwin, while England’s Jos Buttler and Joe Root add to the firepower. Trent Boult and Adam Zampa represent New Zealand and Australia, respectively.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
SRH has Harry Brook and Adil Rashid from England, South Africans Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen, New Zealander Glenn Phillips, and Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans feature Indian stars Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, and Mohammed Shami. David Miller from South Africa, Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka, and Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad complete the squad.
Lucknow Supergiants (LSG)
KL Rahul, the LSG skipper, is the sole Indian player in the World Cup squad. Marcus Stoinis (Australia), Quinton de Kock (South Africa), and Mark Wood (England) complete the representation.
Delhi Capitals (DC)
DC adds David Warner and Mitchell Marsh to the Australian contingent, Lungi Ngidi represents South Africa, and Kuldeep Yadav adds spin prowess to the Indian lineup.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
Virat Kohli, the former Indian and RCB captain, headlines the RCB representation. Mohammed Siraj, Glenn Maxwell, and Josh Hazlewood add depth, while England’s David Willey completes the RCB World Cup representation.
