On Tuesday, April 11, the Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered their fourth straight defeat in IPL 2023, losing out to Mumbai Indians in a last-ball thriller at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. After losing the toss, DC was all-out for 172 in 19.4 overs, with David Warner (51 off 47 balls) and Axar Patel (54 off 25 balls) contributing half-centuries.

Piyush Chawla and Jason Behrendorff picked up three wickets each, while Riley Meredith had two scalps. Mumbai Indians started strongly as Rohit Sharma (65 off 45 balls) displayed aggressive intent against DC pacers early on. Ishan Kishan (31) supported him well as the pair put on a 71-run opening stand in 7.2 overs. However, a misunderstanding led to Kishan’s run-out dismissal on the next ball.

Tilak Varma (41) stepped up and impressed everyone with his dazzling batting style. However, DC bowlers put pressure on the final overs by picking up several wickets. Despite this, MI’s Tim David and Cameron Green managed to finish off the match in the final ball of the last over. DC is now the only team without a victory in IPL 2023. Frustration was expressed all over social media following yet another heartbreaking defeat. Here are some of the reactions from the fans:

“180 was probably the par score on this wicket”: Delhi Capitals captain

David Warner shared his take on the game after its conclusion, noting that their bowlers had done a respectable job and shouldn’t be held accountable for their defeat to the Mumbai Indians. He particularly praised Anrich Nortje for executing a series of perfect yorkers at an impressive speed in the final over, with their team only needing to defend five runs. He stated:

“On the wrong end, but we can’t fault our bowlers; they were excellent today. Rohit was fantastic at the top of the order, and we did well to pull things back. He’s (Nortje) world-class. That’s what we expect from the big fella.

“From the last three games we’ve played, there are a lot of positives. One thing we need to do is make sure we don’t lose wickets in clumps. Axar has been fantastic with his batting; we’ll probably have to push him at 4 soon. 180 was probably the par score on this wicket for the start we had.”
