The BCCI’s VP, Rajeev Shukla, shared that Ravichandran Ashwin, off-spinner for Team India, couldn’t play the Rajkot Test. He had to hurry back to Chennai, his mother is ill.

Last Friday, February 16, Ravichandran Ashwin made history. He became the second Indian and ninth world bowler to make 500 Test cricket outs. He marked this achievement by getting England’s opening player, Zak Crawley, out on Day 2 of the third Test against England in Rajkot.

However, that same Friday night, the BCCI made an unexpected statement. It stated that Ravichandran Ashwin had left the Rajkot Test effective immediately. The reason was a ‘family medical emergency’.

While the BCCI did not provide any more information on the emergency, the board’s vice-president Rajeev Shukla turned to his X account and posted:

“Wishing speedy recovery of mother of @ashwinravi99. He has to rush and leave Rajkot test to Chennai to be with his mother. @BCCI.”

While Ashwin took his 500th Test wicket on Day 2 in Rajkot, England made a strong start in response to India’s first innings total of 445. They were 207/2 after 35 overs at stumps. Opener Ben Duckett was on a stunning 133 off 118 balls, with 21 fours and two sixes.

With Ravichandran Ashwin not playing, India relies on spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja to take on more work. Kuldeep allowed 42 runs in six overs on Day 2 but didn’t secure a wicket. Jadeja’s performance showed 0/33 after four overs.
