The BCCI reportedly approached Ashish Nehra to become the T20I coach for Team India after they lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia. The coaching situation is uncertain as Rahul Dravid’s contract is also ending.
According to a report from the Indian Express, the offer was declined by the former Indian pacer. Ashish Nehra achieved significant success as head coach of the Gujarat Titans. He guided the team to victory in the 2022 season and secured second place in the 2023 edition.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached Rahul Dravid to take over as the head coach for the Indian cricket team in all three formats. This opportunity arose after Ashish Nehra declined the T20I head coach post. In fact, rumors suggest that the BCCI has even offered Dravid a contract extension to continue his coaching role across all three formats.
Team India captain Rohit Sharma and top selector Ajit Agarkar believe Dravid should remain as head coach at least till the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Dravid remains uncertain about committing long-term to the demanding position. He would rather have a role that doesn’t involve frequent travel, such as being the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru or even a potential gig in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dravid is considering alternatives due to the hectic scheduling and workload associated with the current post.
Dravid is being strongly connected to the open mentor role at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) team. This comes after Gautam Gambhir left to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
BCCI awaits Dravid’s decision on his future, considers all scenarios
In a recent report by Cricbuzz, it was revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made arrangements for the necessary travel documents of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and their coaching staff. These documents will facilitate their upcoming tour of South Africa.
The report goes on to say that as Dravid makes his future decision, the BCCI is considering all options. It’s probable that Laxman’s present coaching staff will stick with the Twenty20 international team for the three-match series starting on December 10.
If Dravid accepts the invitation to remain as head coach, he may take over the remaining three ODIs and two Tests in South Africa.
Laxman and his coaching staff might be granted visas to lead the India ‘A’ squad, which will play three four-day matches in December 2023.
