Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka was dissatisfied with his timed out dismissal against Bangladesh in the 2023 World Cup encounter on Monday, November 6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
The 36-year-old labeled the behavior of Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and his team as shameful while he defended himself.
Angelo Mathews shared in the after-game press briefing:
“I have done nothing wrong. It’s a disgraceful act from Shakib and Bangladesh. There was no common sense at that moment. This is the lowest an opposition team stooped to in my 15-year international career.”

Angelo Mathews left without facing a single ball for the uninitiated. The right-handed batsman came out to the plate wearing the incorrect helmet. He inquired for the right helmet and wasted nearly three minutes in the process.
In the meanwhile, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan requested a timed out wicket. The right-hander begged Shakib and the umpires to drop the appeal, but the former stayed firm. Mathews was furious with himself after the decision.
Angelo Mathews later terminated Shakib and said him farewell with a wristwatch gesture. Bangladesh, on the other hand, won by three wickets to maintain their ambitions of finishing in the top seven for automatic selection to the 2025 Champions Trophy alive.

As per the rules set by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for cricket:
“40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
The time has been lowered to two minutes in the World Cup.
What happened in the 2023 World Cup match?
After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 279 in 49.3 overs. Charith Asalanka batted brilliantly, reaching 108 off 105 balls, including five sixes and six boundaries.
Tanzim Hasan Shakib was the standout bowler, producing figures of 3/80, while Shoriful Islam and Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan each took two wickets. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also took a wicket.
Bangladesh responded by winning the game with seven wickets in hand in 41.1 overs, their second victory in the World Cup.
Najmul Hossain Shanto led the way with 90 runs off 111 balls, including 12 boundaries. Shakib also scored 90 runs from 101 deliveries, including two sixes and 12 fours. The pair put up a 169-run partnership for the third wicket.
Dilshan Madushanka bowled brilliantly for Sri Lanka, ending with figures of 3/69, while Maheesh Theekshan and Angelo Mathews each took two wickets.
Kusal Mendis and company will next face New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup on November 9 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will face Australia in the final league game on November 11 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association in Pune.
